Cherrapunjee, which means ‘the land of oranges’, is at an elevation of 4290 ft. Located in the Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, it was once renowned for being the wettest place on earth. Cherrapunjee is about 50 km from the capital of Meghalaya, Shillong. It is impressive with its roaring waterfalls, deep gorges, dense mists, rainfall and greenery.

Cherrapunjee is a place of relaxation and adventure. On a clear sunny day one can see as far as Bangladesh.
Near Cherrapunjee, one can visit the enchanting Mawsmai Falls, Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sister’s fall and many others.

Around Cherrapunjee, Khasi monoliths stones in the memory of their ancestors lie dotted around.

Cherrapunjee produces the best quality of 
oranges as well as pineapples. In fact, Cherrapunjee oranges are the ancestors of the famous Nagpuri oranges.

What to Do

Cherrapunjee is a good place for trekking. The most popular trekking route is that leads to Double Decker Living Root bridge in Nongriat village.

Other activities to do in Cherrapunjee are river canyoning, rock climbing and camping. In winters one can take baths in waterfalls, mountain streams and cool springs.

Birders can enjoy watching a variety of birds, resident to the Khasi Hills which cannot be found anywhere else.

Best time to Visit

Best time to visit is from September to April. It rains heavily during the monsoons from May to August.

How to Reach


One can fly directly to Shillong and then take a taxi for Cherrapunjee. One can also reach Guwahati and then take a taxi for Cherrapunjee which takes about five hours. Cherrapunjee is 54km from Shillong.
